Overview

This classic mobile safari route travels north from the Okavango Delta region to the Chobe National Park, offering a diverse range of ecosystems and wildlife experiences, from water-based activities in Khwai to predator action in Savuti and huge elephant herds in the Chobe Riverfront.

Itinerary

Part 1: Khwai Concession (2 Nights) 

The Khwai Concession, bordering Moremi Game Reserve, is known for its rich wildlife and unique rules that allow activities prohibited in national parks, such as walking safaris and night drives. 

• Day 1: Arrival & Afternoon Game Drive
  • Depart early from Maun, arrive at  Khwai.
  • Set up camp and enjoy lunch.
  • Embark on an afternoon 4x4 game drive to explore the floodplains, riverine woodlands, and grasslands in search of plains game and predators like lion, leopard, and wild dog.
  • Return to camp for dinner and overnight stay.
• Day 2: Mokoro Excursion & Night Drive
  • Morning: Experience a tranquil mokoro safari (traditional dugout canoe) on a tributary of the Khwai River. This activity provides a peaceful, water-level perspective for excellent birdwatching and observing aquatic life like hippos and crocodiles.
  • Afternoon/Evening: Go on an evening or night game drive after sunset. Using a spotlight, your guide will help you spot nocturnal animals such as civets, genets, porcupines, and potentially active predators. 

Part 2: Savuti, Chobe National Park (2 Nights) 

After breakfast on Day 3, you will embark on a game drive transfer to the dry, open plains of 

Savuti, located within Chobe National Park. Savuti is famous for its large lion prides known to hunt elephants and its unpredictable channel and marsh system. 

• Day 3: Transfer to Savuti & Exploration
  • Enjoy a game drive en route (approximately 6 hours of driving, plus stops) through varying landscapes, arriving at your private campsite in Savuti for lunch.
  • After settling in, head out for an afternoon game drive focusing on the Savuti Marsh and waterholes, where animals congregate, especially during the dry season.
• Day 4: Predator Tracking & Rock Art
  • Spend the day on morning and afternoon game drives in this predator-dense region. Look for lion, hyena, cheetah, and African wild dogs.
  • Visit the Gubatsa Hills (rocky outcrops) to see ancient San rock paintings and enjoy panoramic views of the area. 

Part 3: Chobe Riverfront & Kasane (2 Nights) 

On Day 5, you'll travel north again to the lush Chobe Riverfront, known for the highest concentration of elephants in Africa. 

• Day 5: Transfer to Chobe Riverfront & Boat Cruise
  • After an early breakfast, take a scenic drive to the Chobe River area near Kasane. In the afternoon, embark on a spectacular boat safari on the Chobe River. This activity is a highlight, offering close-up, unique photographic opportunities of huge elephant herds, buffalo, hippos, and abundant birdlife from the water.
• Day 6: Morning Game Drive & Leisure
  • Enjoy a final early morning game drive along the riverfront to witness predators before they rest and watch the park come alive at sunrise.
  • Return to camp for brunch and relax, enjoying the camp surroundings by the river. A cultural visit to a local village might be an option. 

Day 7: Departure

• After a final breakfast, the safari ends with a transfer to Kasane, either to your hotel or the airport for your onward journey. You can also arrange a day trip to the nearby Victoria Falls from Kasane.
